We provide diagnosis and treatment of surgically operable diseases of the brain, nervous system and spine. Commonly performed procedures include surgery for brain tumours and operations on aneurysms and other vascular pathologies of the brain within the complex cerebrovascular centre. We perform the full range of spinal surgical procedures in cooperation with the Traumacenter. Diagnostic equipment including magnetic resonance and angiography is available 24 hours a day all year round.
We use the latest generation of Zeiss microscopes with intraoperative fluorescence angiography and detection of tumour tissue for all microsurgical procedures. We use cranial and spinal navigation as standard, often in combination with our unique CT mainframe, which we were among the first to acquire in Europe.
We perform all minor procedures on the spine using a microscope and the least invasive techniques. Intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring is available. This is mostly used for spinal tumours and brain tumours in high-risk areas. In recent years we have been developing endoscopic and endoscopically assisted operations, especially for tumours of the pituitary and brain ventricles.
Our specialized intensive care unit contains 5 stroke unit beds, 7 beds in the combined orthopaedic and neurosurgical postoperative unit, and another 6 beds separated in a box system for patients requiring mechanical ventilation. The ICU has its own mobile CT machine, allowing 300 bedside tests a year without the need to disconnect the patient from devices and transport them.
We run daily outpatient care and several specialist clinics, where we decide on suitable surgical treatment, monitor patients after operations and provide consultant services in our catchment area.
Although we are not a university hospital, we perform extensive research and educational activities. We are an international-level training centre for spinal diseases, and participate in technological research and development. Our doctors actively participate in events in the Czech Republic and abroad, and occupy important positions in specialist domestic and international medical societies.
